Another tip is to show yourself vulnerable and ask questions to learn more instead of being confident and sticking to what you have already mastered. For example, if you want to talk about hiking, but you don't know the word in French, just say it. Sorry I am looking for the word in French, but I don't know it, how do you call this in French? Et voilà, with almost no effort, you would be adding a new word to your vocabulary and rest is just practice, practice, practice...
