A native or resident of Alberta’s capital city is called an *Edmontonian*. While the demonym *Edmontonian* is encountered in newspapers and magazines, it is often replaced in more formal writing by *native*, *resident* or *inhabitant of* *Edmonton*, or some similar phrase.

- Edmontonian (*or* Edmonton native) Emily Murphy was one of the Famous Five.
- Many residents of Edmonton (*or* Edmonton residents) enjoy canoeing on the North Saskatchewan River.

*Edmonton* is commonly used as a modifier, and *Edmontonian* is also encountered occasionally.

- The Edmonton Oilers, the city’s NHL team, won their first Stanley Cup in 1984.
- With its hundreds of stores and its other exciting features, the mall is an important Edmontonian tourist attraction.

Note that the term *Edmontonian* is also used in reference to a geologic age.

- The Edmontonian age is part of the late Cretaceous era.

*Gateway to the North* is a popular nickname for the city of Edmonton.

- Edmonton is known as “the Gateway to the North” and as one of Canada’s sunniest cities.
