Great article, Gael!
I agree with most here that these arbitrary tools to make text "readable" for Grade 8 audiences are not the best way to go. Yet, some departments use these tools as a "blanket" solution.
They key for professionals in our field is to put ourselves in the reader's shoes... If we are trying to make sense of the text, it will likely be a head-scratcher for the reader as well.
