The Language Portal of Canada, which was launched in 2009, is an initiative of the Translation Bureau. The Language Portal provides free access to a wide range of quality language resources in English and French. The Language Portal team develops resources and publishes them on its public-facing website, promoting Canada’s official languages and cultural openness.

Mandate and objectives
The Language Portal of Canada is funded through the Action Plan for Official Languages. The Language Portal’s mandate is twofold: to provide Canadians with free access to quality language resources that are created and updated by the Bureau’s language professionals and to promote those resources. The Portal’s objectives are:
- to help Canadians communicate more effectively in both official languages
- to showcase Canadian language expertise
- to contribute to the vitality of official language minority communities
Target audiences
The Language Portal is designed for the general public, and more specifically for anyone who:
- wants to deepen their knowledge of English or French as a first language
- wants to improve their English or French as a second or additional language
- writes for work or personal purposes
- wants to stay up to date on what’s happening in the field of language
- is interested in or curious about language
- teaches English or French or is learning English or French
Our resources in a nutshell
The Language Portal has about 24 000 pages of resources.
The Portal’s flagship products are:
- Language Navigator, a search engine that helps you find articles on difficult points of language; quizzes; blog posts; French conjugation tables; and more
- TERMIUM Plus®, the Government of Canada’s terminology data bank, which provides English and French equivalents for over 4 million terms in specialized fields
The Portal has resources to help you hone your language skills:
- Nearly 900 language quizzes help you test your knowledge of language and polish your writing skills, all while having fun
- Our 13 writing tools provide solutions to difficult points of language in English and French
- The section Improve your English or French skills lists articles and quizzes designed to help you improve your command of both official languages
The Portal also gives you a chance to explore the world of language with resources that give you an overview of language in Canada:
- The Our Languages blog features over 500 posts written by bloggers who showcase language across the country
- The Collection of Canadian Language Resources boasts hundreds of links to glossaries, resources to help you write a résumé, information on Indigenous languages and sign languages, and more
- The Official Languages Hub® allows you to simultaneously search through a host of resources from Government of Canada departments and agencies to find policies, standards, best practices and other information on both official languages

Data on the Language Portal of Canada is published in Canadian Heritage’s official languages annual reports.

Results of the latest public opinion research survey
The most recent public opinion research survey was conducted in spring 2022. A new survey is planned for 2026–2027.

The following are the results of the survey conducted by the Portal in spring 2022 to determine how satisfied users are with its resources.
- Language Portal
- 88% of Portal users rated the quality of the resources as good or excellent
- 90% of those surveyed said the Portal is useful or very useful for finding the right word in their second language
- 86% of users found the Portal useful or very useful for drafting texts at work
- Language Navigator
- 88% of users rated the quality of Language Navigator as good or excellent
- TERMIUM Plus®
- 89% of users rated the quality of TERMIUM Plus® as good or excellent
