Les sources ne s’entendent pas sur le genre du nom acre. La plupart des grands dictionnaires français privilégient le féminin, alors que d’autres donnent les deux genres.
Au Canada, l’usage a une préférence marquée pour le masculin, qui n’est pas à rejeter : cet emploi est attesté dans certains ouvrages canadiens, et il constitue un vestige du dialecte normand, où acre était du genre masculin.
Il faut éviter d’écrire âcre, avec un accent circonflexe, qui est un adjectif.
