Le maître d’œuvre est responsable de l’exécution des travaux.
Le maître d’ouvrage fait faire le travail, s’occupe de la rémunération et fixe les échéances. C’est lui qui confie l’exécution des travaux au maître d’œuvre.
Le maître d’ouvrage et le maître d’œuvre désignent parfois la même personne ou le même groupe.
