Le nom mérite peut se dire, entre autres, d’une personne ou d’une chose digne de louanges, en raison de ses qualités morales ou intellectuelles :
- les mérites d’un texte, d’une toile
- les mérites d’un élève studieux
- l’évaluation des employés selon leur mérite/au mérite
Toutefois, c’est bien-fondé, et non mérite, qu’il faut employer pour désigner la valeur intrinsèque d’une cause ou d’une question :
- Le tribunal établira le bien-fondé de la cause.
