effect, into effect

The phrasal verbs put into effect, bring into effect, and come into effect describe the implementation of a plan or system, or the coming into force of a law. Note that the correct preposition is into and not in.

  • When Helena puts her plan into effect, only two employees will be allowed to go on vacation at the same time.
  • The new ferry schedules will be brought into effect at midnight on April 1.
  • Ottawa’s smoking by-law came into effect on August 1, 2001.
