If is used informally as a substitute for whether, but this use is not recommended in formal writing.

  • Kenji wondered if (whether) his big sister would bring him more candy.
  • Alice didn’t know whether (if) I was angry or sad.
  • Whether I get a tattoo or not is strictly my business.
