Jackknife is the usual spelling for both the noun and the verb, but jack-knife is also seen.

  • As he walked down the deserted country road, Juan Carlos found a brand-new jackknife.
  • Transport trucks were jackknifed all over the highway after the tornado.

The plural is jackknives or jack-knives.

  • The security officer took our jackknives from us as we got on the airplane in Regina.
