mis-

The prefix mis- has three meanings.

Meaning 1: wrongly, incorrectly

  • They misspelled my name in the concert program.
  • The woman’s symptoms were misdiagnosed.

Meaning 2: bad, badly

  • The Grants have suffered a lot of misfortune.
  • The cranky child misbehaved throughout the entire recital.

Meaning 3: not

  • The committee mistrusted the contractor’s statements.
