The term value-added tax (VAT) refers to the government tax placed on goods and services as they pass through each level of production and distribution.
The phrase value-added is hyphenated when the two words together function as an adjective before a noun.
- Our value-added tax (VAT) is called the GST.
- After those trees are harvested, there will be an opportunity for value-added manufacturing.
When value functions as a noun modified by the participle added, do not use a hyphen.
