value added, value-added, value-added tax, VAT

The term value-added tax (VAT) refers to the government tax placed on goods and services as they pass through each level of production and distribution.

The phrase value-added is hyphenated when the two words together function as an adjective before a noun.

  • Our value-added tax (VAT) is called the GST.
  • After those trees are harvested, there will be an opportunity for value-added manufacturing.

When value functions as a noun modified by the participle added, do not use a hyphen.

  • Is it a complicated process to calculate the value added to a product?
