Yukon became the official proper name for Canada’s westernmost territory under the Yukon Act of 2002.
Former official name: Yukon Territory
Before 2002, the territory was known as Yukon Territory.

Use of the definite article with “Yukon”
The Yukon government uses the definite article in government publications, such as tourism guides, news releases, letters and policy documents.

Omission of the definite article with “Yukon”
Until 2021, the territorial government omitted the definite article before Yukon in all documents. Today, the Yukon government omits the definite article before Yukon only in formal documents, such as agreements and legislative texts. In these documents, Yukon is used to ensure consistency with the Yukon Act of 2002.
- The Order of Yukon Act created the Order of Yukon, an award that recognizes individuals who make an outstanding contribution to the Yukon.
